Forum: netlabels Subject: Soundblox for streaming MP3 audio = ++good

Hey all,

So looks like we have an alternative streaming option to the M3U streaming for any MP3 releases on the Archive now, in the form of Soundblox. This seems to be a little Flash application which opens in a new window and allows listening to multi-item song playlists, random playing, album art to be displayed, and more.

For example, you can try it on the latest Aleksi Virta release on Monotonik, heh:

http://www.archive.org/audio/audio-details-db.php?collection=monotonik&collectionid=mtk123

It's working really well for me (Win2K, Mozilla 1.6 Beta), so that's really good news - it's good to have an alternative to the sometimes flaky .M3U stuff.

So thanks to whoever (Jon?) set this up. Not sure if there's going to be an official announcement of it, but consider this officially jumping the gun. :P

Thanks for noticing! Soundblox is a flash based widget by Lazlo systems that was recommended to me by Henry Minsky, and Jon installed a test while on vacation in germany (!).

We put it out there as a test. Please provide feedback.

It does not work on Mac IE, but does on safari. I find the startup pause to be really distracting. And it sometimes does not work. Pls give feedback!

Hey Brwester - Marc Canter here.

I helped Laszlo develop the SoundBlox MP3 player - and you can find it on my blog:

http://blogs.it/0100198

I also got it onto Barlow's blog at:

http://barlow.typepad.com/barlowfriendz/

That jukebox features a Lisa Rein song - BTW!

Anyway I'd love to help you guys to utilize SoundBlox in lots of coolio ways - liek sending XML files directly. Perhaps you guys wanna host a Laszlo server yourselves?

I certainly think it should work on Mac IE - so please report any bugs to me or Laszlo directly. The contact name there is Lyndon Wong:

lwong@laszlosystems.com

BTW Here's the page on SoundBlox:

http://soundblox.blogspot.com

BTW Laszlo will have (next up) a killer photo album tool coming.

I should have known you were involved in this cool tool!

I believe we will be getting a server for here. On mac ie-- I just read this in the docs, I did not seem to work just now.

small requests; handle more formats (ogg, flac, shn)

big request: Lets do story-mixer: handle simple SMIL files of movies and audio clips to make a seamless presentation. could be killer.

wait till you see what they (Laszlo) just did for Kodak! Tears will come dripping down your cheeks!

They're willing to comp you a Laszlo server - so you can host a smuch as you want! Perhaps your people could put in OGG, etc.

They did this (BTW) just as a demo to show ffolks what's possible. That was my idea.

Now onto Phtos and Reviews!

This could get sticky, but could there be a soundblox for a whole collection? The interface seems perfectly suited for navigating through different artists and releases within a collection.

We actually started doing compilations of some collections, for example Commie, which has the first 25 releases in one place, meaning you can download them all easily as a ZIP, and also Soundblox them all at once - Soundblox is the Flash audio player, for those wondering.

As for some kinda hack to do Soundblox over multiple directories, Jon Aizen would be able to answer that.. it may be easier, considering we have so much disc space and we only have MP3s hosted, to do more of these label compilations.

What if one were to make a static xml to feed the Soundblox? It seems like that would be the same or less work than making compilations, and more flexible.

Looking at http://www.archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?mediatype=audio&collection=commie it seems like the xml could be done dynamically as well, though. It would just be a modification of collection-rss.php to fit what soundblox wants.

Ideas, ideas...
